Valse no. 1 Audio

Valse No. 1 by Enrique Granados was originally written for solo piano as a set of “Valses Poeticos”. The primary melody is in part 1 and is a Level 8 part. Part 2 is split into either level 5 with block accompinament or 6 with arrpegiated accompinament. Begin with the first phrase, measures 1-8. From the beginning, address balance and tone issues. The melody should be prominent and played with beautiful tone. The bass line in part 3 should also be light and legato. Decide on a color change for measure 33.

Cultural/Historical Context:
Enrique Granados, 1867-1916, was born in Spain and is primarily known for his piano compositions with a strong, traditional Spanish sound. Because he was so influenced by traditional Spanish folk music, many of his piano works are meant to mimic the sound of the guitar. Have the students listen to the “Valses Poeticos” both on piano and guitar.

The audio recording for this selection was performed by members of the Austin Classical Guitar Youth Orchestra Iris Rentaria, James Snyder, and Aidan Suskic, engineered by ACGYO member and ACG intern Lennox Kolics, and recorded at Chez Boom Audio in Austin, Texas, which generously donated studio space, equipment, and expert guidance.
