“Spanish Dance” is a quick, Level four piece that was originally written for piano. There are many articulation markings and dynamic markings in the score that can be a challenge to execute at speed. Start slow to set these musical gestures. Each part is equally difficult in the piece. All players must be comfortable alternating at faster tempos and reaching quickly up to the fifth fret to catch the occasional high “A”. Feel free to add repeats for length and to adjust larger dynamic phrases accordingly. Warm up with a two-octave G Major scale using “Speed Burst” Rhythms as well as one stroke per note to get the left hand moving quickly. Cultural/Historical Context: Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) was an Italian pianist and composer. He was a celebrated composer and player in his time. Listen to Clementi’s piano Sonatas and talk about what it is about this dance that makes it Spanish. What is a Guaracha?
