Rhumba is a level 6 piece that is designed to introduce pima arpeggios. Each part contains arpeggios that are interrupted by block chords. The block chords are meant to reinforce the sensation of having two “teams” involved in playing pima arpeggios (p represents one team and ima represent the other team). The rhumba rhythm is passed around to each part. Model this rhythm for your students. Try not to get bogged down in explaining the intricacies of beat, time etc. Clapping and tapping exercises will be less effective than providing an accurate model and having the students play immediately. BWV 846 is the catalogue number for the first prelude and fugue from J.S. Bach’s famous Well Tempered Clavier. This piece is built on the chord progression from the prelude. You may want to play a recording of a pianist or harpsichordist performing the original prelude (or invite a live performer if you have the resources).
