Pomp and Circumstance Op. 39 No. 1

Region:
England
Style:
Romantic
Composer:
Elgar, Edward

“Pomp and Circumstance” is a portion of the popular March from Op. 39 by English Composer, Edward Elgar. This piece is very recognizable and often played for graduation ceremonies. The melody is a Level 3 part and more students should be assigned here than on any other parts. Guitar 2a is very approachable by Level 4 players and uses the same right hand fingering throughout. Guitar 2b is a challenging arpeggio part with frequent shifts and half bars. Guitar 3a is a Level five part primarily because of the reading challenge that will go into three-note chords. Part 3b is actually a bit easier because the student can just memorize full first position chords and read chord symbols.
