Pavana No. 3 is an all Level 4 piece intended to be played with Pavana No. 6. Just like No. 6, the melodic figures are passed from voice to voice and it is important that they “pop” out of the texture of the piece. Uniform tone across your ensemble is a must with this piece. The dynamics and color markings are suggestions. Feel free to experiment with phrasing. This piece is a great opportunity to teach first position bass notes to all your students. Cultural/Historical Context: Luis de Milan, born 1500, was a Spanish composer who wrote for Viheula (an ancestor of the guitar). He wrote a series of six pavans that are part of standard guitar repertoire today. The Pavan is a slow processional dance to be played for ceremony. This would be a great opportunity to work with Literature or History classes that are reading Shakespeare or studying the Renaissance and Feudalism.
