“Packington’s Pound” is a very famous solo lute work written anonymously in mid to late 1500s England. This arrangement is intended for early Level 3. Part 2 is Level 2 and Part 3 is Level 1. So it would be appropriate for the entire class to learn part one. There are a couple of tricky string crossings such as the pickup to measure 13 where it would be advantageous to start on M finger in the right hand. Stress extreme dynamic contrast on repeated figures to produce an “echo” effect. Watch rushing in the eighth notes.

Cultural/Historical Context:
There are plenty of opportunities to introduce a historical lesson when playing Packington’s Pound. Since, the piece was written during the Renaissance, have the students listen to early lute works and choral music. Talk about the culture during the renaissance. Even coordinate with an English class and work together on a Shakespeare performance with musical accompaniment.
