Opus 31 No. 5 by Fernando Sor is a Legato study originally written for solo guitar. Here Guitar 1 can be played at Level 3 or 8. Part 1 Level 8 will shift and play the melody in fifth position in measure 10. Part 3a and 3b are both level 4, however 3b is slightly simplified for any students who need extra work in reading on the bass strings. For phrasing purposes, have the students stress any notes that create interesting harmonic change such as the A# in measure 15. This piece works well with Opus 35 No. 3.

Cultural/Historical Context:
Fernando Sor, 1778-1839, was one of the most influential and prolific guitar composers throughout history. This Spanish born composer wrote in a late classical, early romantic style that had an enormous impact on the instrument today. Do some research on Fernando Sor and his contemporaries. Construct a lesson including listening examples.
