“A Minor Matter” was written to help teach ensemble skills and the 4/4 conducting pattern. The entrances of each player take place from the conductor’s left to right. Students must carefully count rests and watch the conductor for entrance cues. Guitars 1 and 2 incorporate the high ‘a’ in a few places. Guitar 1 plays some of these brief passages in 3rd position.
Teach these parts by rote, letting the students use the notation as reinforcement. As always, tone, dynamics, and ensemble are the most important aspects when teaching.
