“Malagueña” is a Spanish folk tune usually recognizable by students and audiences. In this arrangement, the student will be playing in D minor and this could be the first time he or she is reading Bb. The melody passes from part 1 to part 2 throughout. So it is important that your ensemble has the same robust tone in all parts. All students can play all parts of “Malagueña”. Teach a fixed finger scale going from open G-A-Bb- C#-D-open E-F. This will establish the Bb in the left hand. Once the left hand is comfortable, teach the 4-bar melody as seen in mm 10-13 as one part to each student. This will get them excited to play the piece and they will have something to take home and play. Pay close attention to the accelerando at the repeat. The students must have their eyes on the conductor for this to work.
