Irish Dance

Region:
Ireland
Style:
Traditional
Composer:
Travis Marcum
Score Audio:

Irish Dance is a quick, Irish folk tune in compound time that will work best as all level 2 or as a level 3 piece if everyone learns the melody. There alternate options for classes with multiple levels represented. Begin this piece by teaching the melodic part from parts 1a and 1b depending on levels. Be sure to accent the two beats that we feel in 6/8 time. A heavy accent will give this piece its Irish sound. Irish dance should be easily approachable and fun to learn for the class. As always, emphasize good tone that comes from a good, big knuckle stroke.

Cultural/Historical Context:
Irish Dance is a folk melody from traditional music in Ireland. Listen to some other Irish folk music with the students to get a feel for the style.

Video tutorials:
It is helpful to review basic right hand set up and pitfalls. Always focus on great tone.

We also recommend watching Dr. Robert Duke discuss refinement and error correction
