The best possible performance of this piece will include every part (1a-3b), but the arrangement allows for a wide variety of levels. None of the parts will be very technically challenging. The important things to work on include: watching the conductor, subtle use of rubato, careful coordination of arpeggiated chords, and attention to dynamics and color. Historical background: Béla Bartók was an important early twentieth century composer from Hungary. He was also a proponent in the development of ethnomusicology. His music frequently uses elements of folk music and dissonant or chromatic harmonies. Students should understand that “wrong” notes are intentional and provide a certain character.
