Hanacpachap

Region:
Peru
Style:
Baroque
Composer:
Anonymous (arr. Williams)

HanacPachap is a processional hymn in the Quechua language of Peru. It was written by an anonymous native composer and later published by the Franciscan scholar Juan PĂ©rez Bocanegra in 1631. It is the first example of polyphony printed in the Americas. The piece is a product of an intersection of European and Native culture as well as Catholic and Pagan religions during a time of conquest.
