This level 4 arrangement requires players on parts 1, 2a, 2c and 3. The optional part 2b (level 8) combines parts 2a and 2c.
In the original score the composer indicates that the cuckoo, played by the clarinet, should be backstage (dans la coulisse). Be creative in producing this effect. You may choose to move the part 1 “cuckoo” players backstage (probably only 1-3 players needed). Alternatively, collaborate with a visual artist (or arts department) to create a cardboard screen to put in front of the “cuckoo” players. Envision an image of a cuckoo (realistic, abstract, caricatured, etc.) on a large piece of cardboard that can be propped up in front of the “cuckoo” players. Be sure the prop allows a line of sight between the cuckoo/s and the conductor.
“The Cuckoo in the Deep Woods” comes from a 14 movement collection entitled “Carnival of the Animals.” It was originally scored for a variety of mixed instruments. In 1949 the American poet Ogden Nash wrote a series of verses to precede the performance of each movement. Collaborate with a Drama or English teacher to select a student to read the corresponding verse before your performance (included below). You may build a suite by combining this piece with the any of the other 5 movements from “Carnival of the Animals” in the guitarcurriculum.com music library.
The Cuckoo in the Deep Woods
Cuckoos lead bohemian lives,
They fail as husbands and as wives,
Therefore, they cynically disparage
Everybody else's marriage.
