This is a level 4 arrangement of the popular Scottish folk song “Auld Lang Syne.” Part one has the melody, part two has some chordal accompaniment figures and part three plays a bass line. Because the piece is so short, it may be beneficial to require everyone to play every part. As always, tone, rhythm, and dynamics are the most important aspects in teaching. Historical Note “Auld Lang Syne” is a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. It is well known in many countries, especially in the English-speaking world. Its traditional use is to celebrate the start of the New Year at midnight on December 31/January 1. The song is also used as an ending at funerals, graduations, and other occasions.
