Arranged by Travis Marcum, “Amazing Grace” is an all Level-4 version of the traditional hymn from the late 1700s. In this piece, all notes falling on strings 1-3 will be played using i-m alternation and all notes on strings 4-6 will be played with p. Consider repeating many times, changing part assignments on each repeat so each student gets to play the melody and explore fingered notes on strings 4-6. Consider timbre and color changes when repeating. As always, focus on expression and character.

Historical & Cultural Context:

“Amazing Grace” is one of the most recognizable songs in the English language. It is a Christian hymn with lyrics written by English poet John Newton in 1779. There are hundreds of expressive, beautiful recordings of this piece. Have your students list to multiple versions of the vocal piece and explore dynamic possibilities.

The attached performance video was recorded by the Glendale Community College Guitar Orchestra under the direction of Chuck Hulihan with Conner Wilson as guest conductor.
