This theme comes from the second movement of Beethoven’s 7th symphony. Premiered in Vienna in 1813, the first performance featured Beethoven as conductor and a number of the most famous musicians of the day. Evidence suggests that the Italian guitar virtuoso Mauro Giuliani played cello during the premier. The audience liked the music so much that the Allegretto was played again as an encore.
