“Danse Bohemian” is an all-Level 9 piece that requires very intricate playing in upper positions from guitar 1 as well as quick right hand dexterity from all. The piece is filled with articulations and dynamics that make this piece both powerful and comical at times. Give your students plenty of time in sectionals to reinforce good fingerings before putting this one together. Historical/Cultural Context: Claude Debussy was considered one of the pioneers of the French Impressionist movement in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Much of his music does not have a clear center around a key therefore depend more on color dynamic. Listen to other piano works by Debussy, Ravel and Fuare’ and discuss what makes this music “Impressionist” even though Debussy disliked this title himself.
