The widely recognized tune “Streets of Cairo,” also known as “The Snake Charmer,” has had a place in the western cultural landscape since the early part of the 20th century. Remind students to play “softly” without excess tension, moving the finger tip obliquely down into and through the string (at an approximate 45 degree angle to the strings).
Be sure to ask students to “string-cross,” positioning the entire hand above the string being played as opposed to reaching with the fingers. As always, ask for beautiful tone and attention to dynamic detail. You will find it useful to repeatedly model both good and bad tone for the student.
