This piece involves three ostinato patterns, one in each part. They are layered on top of each other, and when put together they are magical indeed! Teach Part 1 “top” to the entire class first. This will likely be the first time you introduce i finger free stroke to your classes, we recommend reviewing Right Hand Technique Teacher Tutorial video 2b. (2).
To accomplish Guitar 1 “top” of Blue Magic, instruct your class to place their thumbs (p) on string 2, and their i fingers on string 1. This will ensure stable right-hand positions. Once the class is playing consistent i strokes together, be sure and ask them to vary their dynamics as a group. A class of students playing soft, beautiful string 1s, is really quite lovely. You may wish to play the Guitar 2 “middle” and/or the Guitar 3 “bottom” parts while your students are playing Guitar 1.
